The Tottenham defender found the net on two occasions as Tottenham prolonged their winning streak in away games in the top division and handed the Toffees their first defeat at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Everton were unbeaten in their last five matches at their recently opened stadium at the dockside location, having departed their historic home behind after 133 years at the conclusion of the previous campaign.

But Spurs captain Van de Ven struck twice from set-pieces in the first half to put their strong form at risk, and they were unable to mount a comeback before the midfielder - assisted by former Toffees attacker the Brazilian - nodded in a final goal to seal the victory.

The Everton defender believed he had equalized the scores a short while after the defender's opener, glancing a powerful header past Guglielmo Vicario from an set-piece.

The Portuguese striker, meanwhile, missed a number of opportunities, while the Italian goalkeeper made a succession of fine stops to guarantee the London club went five away games without defeat in the Premier League.

But the VAR intervened, instructing Craig Pawson to check the score on the screen and the official decided that Jack Grealish and Iliman Ndiaye were in offside positions and had interfered with the Spurs keeper.

The win moves Thomas Frank's team into third place in the division, five points off north London rivals and leaders Arsenal.

Everton remain 14th and sit six points ahead of the relegation zone.

Tottenham analysis: Van de Ven excels in duties at both ends of pitch

After a drab midweek display in the Champions League against the French side, where they mustered a mere two shots on target, Frank chose Randal Kolo Muani up front instead of ex-Everton forward the Brazilian.

The summer signing was failed to make much of an impact before being replaced for Richarlison after 60 minutes on the field, but it turns out he wasn't needed in the final outcome.

Defender the Dutchman transformed into an attacking force to be feared.

Spurs' opening strike came from a cleverly executed corner routine, with Rodrigo Bentancur directing the ball toward the face of goal for an free Van de Ven to head home.

And the captain - filling in as captain in Cristian Romero's unavailability - notched his second in first-half stoppage time as he outjumped Jordan Pickford to head home.

The Dutchman was just as outstanding in defence, partnering effectively with Kevin Danso as the pair dealt superbly with the 34 crosses thrown their way by Everton.

Toffees breakdown: Toffees missing finishing touch

Everton's recent stadium had been a fortress, but it seems the freshness may have worn off slightly and supporters flocked to the exits after Sarr's final goal for Tottenham.

The break in the team's winning streak at home won't be a massive worry for the manager, but their striker situation are.

Beto and the other striker - the Toffees' pair of recognised strikers - had netted just one league goal between them before the weekend's outing.

And they were failed to add to that miserable tally on a wet and gloomy night on Merseyside.

The striker's performance was epitomized when he opted to bicycle-kick a golden opportunity from close range, even with having space and time to reposition for a simpler attempt that would have challenged Vicario.

Barry, as well, failed to make an impact after replacing Beto in the 65th minute.

It was not for a lack of chance. The majority of the home side's attacks came through the winger and the forward, who tirelessly delivered threatening crosses into the Tottenham penalty area.

Everton: The team head to Sunderland in the Premier League on Monday, 3 November at 8 PM.

Tottenham: The London club go to Newcastle's ground on late October for their next round Carabao Cup tie against the Magpies.
