For much of season 5 of *Stranger Things*, Holly Wheeler and Max are held captive inside a mental fortress constructed from the memories of Henry Creel. The Discovery in the Mine Shaft

When she finds Max in the world dubbed Camazotz, Holly discovers she is sheltering in a cave that Henry strangely fears. A clever observation a spyglass found in Henry's old home helps Holly understand that the true terror lies beyond the cave. Matching her view to the cut-out, she and Max tumble into a abandoned tunnel.

There, they witness a young, eight-year-old Henry encounter an injured and paranoid man. As the boy offers aid, the man fires a gun, hitting him in the hand. Fighting for his life, Henry kills the man with a rock. "Is this what corrupted him?" Holly questions through tears. The answer is affirmative, but the trauma went deeper than a simple act of survival.

In keeping with mysteries of the final season, the significance of the mine shaft incident originates in the live show Stranger Things: The First Shadow.

An Interdimensional Incident and A Spy's Mission

*The First Shadow* opens with the legendary naval test, which allegedly sent a U.S. Navy ship into a realm dubbed the Abyss. It faced creatures, and the lone returnee was the captain, who emerged in a vegetative state with an entirely new blood.

That survivor's offspring, the future Dr. Brenner, attempted to recreate this experiment in remote Nevada. However, a treacherous employee took experimental components to give to the Soviets, who were keen to start their version of the tests. That traitor in the cavern is the one who stole the materials.

So, What's in the Case?

Given what is understood of his research, the case would assuredly have vials of the altered blood. At that moment, Henry is bleeding from his hand. Exposure likely occurred upon handling the contents, leading to the origin of his telekinetic gifts—abilities he would genetically impart to the kids in Hawkins Lab.

Alternatively, the container could have held dark matter that was destined to travel to the Hawkins lab, where it maintains the stability of the mirror dimension. The stage play explains that young Henry was transported in the Abyss, coming back after half a day fundamentally changed. As a youth, he fights the control of a malevolent force, similar to how Will Byers was controlled by the Mind Flayer in season 2.

Confronting Terror

Henry's enduring terror associated with the mine shows how profoundly traumatic the incident was for him. While he orchestrates the Hive Mind and works to collapse the Abyss into Hawkins, a piece of the scared boy remains. Vecna uses fear, and the narrative points to a showdown between Vecna and Will, who has deliberately faced his greatest terrors to fortify himself.

His confrontation has effectively disarmed Vecna. Crucially, Will now is aware of what his enemy truly fears, potentially giving him a key upper hand in the ultimate battle to come.
