On the eve of his half-decade plus one year in charge, Mikel Arteta has stated plainly that his continued role with the club is inextricably linked to delivering trophies.

Reflecting on: From Appointment to Present

The former Arsenal captain assumed control on December 20th, 2019 and managed to steer the team to an FA Cup victory a short time later. Yet, that initial silverware remains his sole top-tier trophy after taking over from Unai Emery.

“Yes,” Arteta responded upon being asked about his future past 2027. “Yet it's about today. And numerous factors need to fall into place in the next few months as well to deserve that opportunity.”

This weekend sees the six-year milestone with a match versus Everton, the exact opponent Arsenal faced the day after his hiring was confirmed.

Present Challenges

As second-placed Manchester City set to face West Ham earlier in the day, Arsenal could be displaced the summit in the Premier League before their own match begins. This comes despite Arteta overseeing a squad that has been plagued by more than a century of fitness issues since the start of last season.

Arteta is under a contract with 18 months to run on the contract he inked in 2024, yet understands fully that results must come promptly.

Survival in the Job

He went on to explain, highlighting the daily requirement to justify his role. “I think a manager must deserve the right to be here tomorrow. And that is determined by how you react, how you address the media, how you enter the dressing room, the instructions you give.”

He added, praising the consistent faith from the club's ownership, while singling out the players' commitment as most crucial. “Ultimately, the most important ones are those players... Over this half-decade, I’ve seen just players with a degree of commitment, desire to learn and give their all to the team.”

Injury Concerns

Arsenal approaches the Everton match coping with yet another injury. Defender Ben White has been declared unavailable with a hamstring injury that is anticipated to keep him out for several weeks.

Confidence in the Path

Even with the availability issues and the high-stakes environment, Arteta is confident the club's “focus and dialogue” are vastly different from when he initially took over.

The manager referenced the squad's displays as evidence of progress. “Consider the performances, all the club records that were shattered... We still have yet to do that [win trophies]. But that indicates the standard we operate at.”

In closing, the manager stated, “That is a level that the Premier League has not witnessed in the past. And our ambition is to achieve greater objectives. And if we do that, I think we are on the right path to winning.”
