Russell Wilson Fires Back at Former Coach Sean Payton Regarding Quarterback Remarks

NY Giants quarterback Russell Wilson did not hold back on social media this week, reacting to recent comments from his ex-mentor Sean Payton.

"Tasteless... but not shocked...," Wilson declared via social media. "Had no idea you're still bounty hunting 15+ years later through the press."

Wilson's response directly referenced the infamous bounty scandal controversy from 2009 to 2011, when Payton led the Saints.

During that period, the league found that the Saints had rewarded players for making hard hits on opponents. As a result, Payton received a suspension from the NFL for one season.

What Sparked the Recent Dispute

Wilson's response came after Payton delivered comments after the Broncos' remarkable 33-32 victory over the New York. Payton remarked that the team had "found a little spark" with their new QB, who has taken over Wilson as the starting quarterback.

Moreover, Payton hinted that he had informed team owner John Mara that he would rather playing against Wilson instead of Dart.

"I was talking to John Mara not too long ago and I said, 'We were hoping that the switch would've happened long after our game,'" Payton commented.

Context of the Coach-QB Partnership

  • The quarterback joined the Denver from Seattle in 2022 and signed a five-year, $245 million extension.
  • The Broncos finished 4-11 in his debut year before Denver brought in Payton, who was returning to coaching after a stint in TV commentary.
  • The coach replaced Wilson late into the 2023 campaign, a decision that prevented the quarterback from getting injured.

If Wilson remained on the team by March 2024, his $37M pay for 2025 would have been guaranteed. Ultimately, Wilson was released, ending the contentious breakup between the quarterback and his mentor.
