Premier League Updates: Mejbri Banned for Misconduct; Guardiola Says 'Back Line Has to Get Better'
In the latest Premier League developments, a key midfielder has been issued a substantial suspension, a manager has singled out a player's mistakes to prove an argument, and Pep Guardiola has demanded backline improvements after a wild victory.
Mejbri Issued Four-Game Suspension and Financial Penalty
Burnley's player Hannibal Mejbri has been issued a four-match suspension and a financial fine for improper behaviour during a recent match versus Leeds United. The Football Association confirmed the player faced a separate disciplinary panel after allegations of spitting towards visiting fans around the 67th point of a 2-0 win by Burnley.
An FA statement explained: “A disciplinary panel has punished the Hannibal Mejbri due to his actions in the Premier League match with Leeds on 18 October. The charge was that he behaved against the rules of football or in an improper manner by using abusive and/or unacceptable behaviour by spitting at or in the direction of Leeds United supporters.”
It continued, “Mejbri later admitted the allegation, with the panel handing down a four-match suspension and £15,000 following a hearing. The Regulatory Commission’s written reasons for its decisions will be published in due course.” The team, currently 19th in the standings, travel to 12th-placed Newcastle on Saturday.
2. Maresca Singles Out Adarabioyo's Mistakes to Make a Point
Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has argued that not having experience is not a problem for his club, highlighting how defender Tosin Adarabioyo's years did not stop him from having a bad game during a 3-1 defeat to Leeds United.
Maresca, who oversees the youngest squad in the Premier League, rejected the idea that inexperience played a part in their poor result. He presented his argument by singling out Tosin, Chelsea's oldest outfield player on the pitch, after he produced an error-strewn display at the back.
“People always talk about a lack of experience after we fail to win,” Maresca stated. “When we defeated Barcelona, we drew against Arsenal, no one was mentioning experienced players. I understand that if we don’t win, people are always looking for the reason why, but in my view why we didn’t win to Leeds was not down to inexperience, it’s because we were not at our best.”
He added, “Who is the most senior player on our team in the match? It was Tosin. Did he play good? So, it’s not about his age. It’s about those 11 players, they were simply not up to standard.”
3. Guardiola Insists Defensive Solidity 'Must Improve'
The Manchester City manager has stated the champions have learnt from their midweek thriller against Fulham with the game is now in the past. The team held on for a 5-4 win during a remarkable encounter on Tuesday, after leading 5-1 with about 60 minutes gone.
Coming after they fought off a fightback to win 3-2 in their prior game, prompting further doubts regarding whether they are resilient required to sustain a title challenge against pace-setters Arsenal. “It’s forgotten,” Guardiola commented. “Valuable lessons, I hope. In the Premier League, for every team, one must take onboard both good and bad in the good things and bad things and focus on the next one.”
“Of course I am worried,” Guardiola added. “We are trying to analyse what happened, so as not to allow so many goals. After conceding three scored against Leeds, and five goals by Fulham it shows the two versions, right? Therefore, always we have done plenty of positive things. But how many shots on target had Leeds ? Three? Scored two. That ratio is good. And attempts did Fulham ? Five, six? So the average of chances conceded we can see is high. We have to improve.”
4. Newcastle Focus New Defenders' Contracts
Newcastle United's new sporting director, Ross Wilson, has made new deal negotiations involving key backline players Tino Livramento and Sven Botman at the top of his to-do list at St James’ Park. He arrived from Nottingham Forest recently and was pleased that midfielder Sandro Tonali is on a contract that runs until 2029 with an option until 2030.
That has left Wilson free to focus on talks for Livramento and Botman's representatives. Livramento's current deal set to expire in 2027 and Botman's in 2028, Newcastle's efforts have assumed a certain urgency.
“My first three or four days in the job was when I found that Sandro’s contract situation is much better than I was expecting,” he stated. “But it’s no secret that we would want to extend Tino’s contract and also would want to renew Sven Botman’s too. Those discussions are underway.”
Head coach Eddie Howe is missing Botman for the home game against Burnley this Saturday, with the defender likely to be sidelined for another week.
Nuno Confirms Paquetá Will Start for West Ham
West Ham manager Nuno Espírito Santo has stated that Lucas Paquetá is back to the starting lineup for they face Brighton on Sunday, after serving his suspension for the red card against Liverpool.
“It is in the past,” the manager said. “I am confident it will not be repeated because he personally acknowledged his mistake. We spoke in the dressing room. I believe it is over and it will not be repeated.”
Nuno also understands the significant strain facing his team, who are 18th before the weekend fixtures. “We can't avoid it,” he admitted. “It is the situation. We have to confront it. We are fighting for our top-flight status. We can't hide it.”
Arteta Impressed by No 9 Stand-in Merino
The Spanish midfielder may keep his place leading the line for Arsenal central striker despite the club's usual strikers are fit again. Merino has been playing as a makeshift No 9 because of injuries for Viktor Gyokeres, Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus.
Merino found the net for Arsenal’s opener against Brentford before assisting Bukayo Saka for the second in a 2-0 win that maintained {their|
