Former National Football League player Antonio Brown is traveling to Miami to address an attempted murder charge connected with a shooting that took place in May, as his lawyer entering a not guilty plea on his behalf.

Jail logs in Essex, New Jersey, indicate that Brown was released on Tuesday early for his transfer to Florida. Brown, a highly popular athletes in the National Football League, had waived extradition to Florida from New Jersey, where he was held after being apprehended in the city of Dubai.

Brown’s lawyer, Mark Eiglarsh, stated in an message that he has earlier lodged a written not guilty plea to the attempted murder charge. Brown could be in a Miami court as soon as Wednesday morning for a bond session, Eiglarsh said.

According to his detention warrant, Brown is alleged of seizing a firearm from a security staffer after a celebrity fighting contest in May and firing a couple of bullets at a man he had clashed with previously. The reported victim, Zul-Qarnain Kwame Nantambu, stated to authorities that a bullet scraped his nape.

Eiglarsh said that Brown was simply defending himself from Nantambu.

“The steps he was forced to take were exclusively in self-defense against the reported individual’s hostile behavior. Brown was assaulted that night and acted within his legal right to protect himself,” Eiglarsh stated.

Brown was not right away apprehended because at first authorities did not identify Nantambu as a victim. It wasn’t until later in May that Nantambu gave a full statement about the incident to police and pointed out Brown as the perpetrator, the affidavit indicates.

From his digital content, Brown had been staying in Dubai for several weeks. In a update after the altercation, Brown claimed he was defending himself because he was “attacked by multiple people who sought to take my jewelry and cause personal injury to me.”
