McLaren's Lando Norris Claims Debut F1 Drivers' Crown in Abu Dhabi Despite Max Verstappen's Grand Prix Triumph.

Through an exhibition of gutsy driving, Lando Norris has sealed his debut F1 world title by taking P3 at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. Third place was sufficient for the British driver, even though Red Bull's Max Verstappen took the victory and his teammate at McLaren Oscar Piastri finished in second.

He delivered precisely what was required in an enormously intense contest at the Yas Marina Circuit, including a number of audacious passing maneuvers, with flawless execution from both himself and his team.

A Historic Achievement for British Motorsport and McLaren

In taking his first world championship, Norris becomes the eleventh driver from Britain to achieve this. It also brings to an end McLaren's title wait, which dated back to 2008 when Lewis Hamilton last won it. Additionally, it had been 27 years since McLaren achieved the drivers’ and constructors’ double back in 1998.

It represents a stunning resurgence for the team, from a low point in the middle of the last decade when they twice finished ninth in the standings. The revival has been helmed by team principal Zak Brown and, more recently, by Andrea Stella, who has delivered an efficient team with a very fast car.

A Tale of Two Teammates

For the Australian Oscar Piastri, who had led the championship for much of the season, there was obvious disappointment at faltering in the closing stages. Several of poor performances and some errors, such as crashing out in Baku, proved costly. Nevertheless, he finishes the season having shown he is also world champion material. To have been so fast in only his third season in F1, with multiple victories, remains a huge achievement.

Verstappen was also exceptional to take the title battle to the wire. He did all he could in Abu Dhabi with the race victory, but having come back from a significant deficit mid-season, he fell just short of having enough to overhaul Norris, ending up just a handful of points behind.

Sealing the Deal with Ruthless Execution

He secured his title with ruthless focus to take the crown that had been so close but eluded him as McLaren struggled at the previous two rounds. These included a DSQ in Las Vegas and then an egregious strategy call in Qatar.

This represents a significant accomplishment for the driver in his seventh year in F1, each one with McLaren. He remained loyal to the team even during some difficult times, believing they would return to the top. That belief was vindicated in Abu Dhabi.

Norris performed a remarkable job to persist with his goal, maintaining his composure and belief during periods under the cosh. After losing the championship lead to Piastri after Saudi Arabia, he nonetheless worked at getting the most from what he could.

The Decisive Grand Prix

In the race, Verstappen held his first place through turn one, but the three title leaders kept it clean. Piastri, using the more durable compound, was aggressive and made a spectacular move to go round the outside of Norris to claim second place.

This demonstrated the McLarens were allowed to fight, but put Norris under threat from Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc. Early pit stops saw Norris come out into midfield traffic, but he passed rivals within a lap and displayed great composure in his driving.

During the race, he made an absolutely bravura move to dive past two cars at once, moving up to fourth and closing on Verstappen's teammate. Red Bull told their driver to delay Norris, leading to a breathtaking overtaking attempt where Norris burst up the inside line, nearly completely off the track.

This moment was looked at by the stewards, with a few nerve-wracking laps passing before a time penalty for his rival and exoneration for Norris was decided. This bold move unimpeded was crucial to his championship bid.

Diverging Fates

As Norris became the first Briton to take the title since Lewis Hamilton in 2020, the difference in fortunes between the two was pronounced. As the young guns fought for the title, Hamilton, the veteran, could only finish eighth place in Abu Dhabi, a disappointing ending to a dismal season with Ferrari.

Making his debut with the Scuderia had been met by excitement but has yielded what was easily his most challenging year ever, ending up sixth in the championship and failing to secure a podium. He has looked jaded in the final rounds and will look to reset over the winter.
