Former US treasury secretary Lawrence Summers is leaving the governing body at the ChatGPT creator, just a week after a batch of emails between him and notorious criminal the accused trafficker became widely known.

Summers commented in an announcement that he was "thankful for the chance to have contributed, optimistic about the potential of the enterprise, and eagerly await tracking their advancement".

The prominent academic, who previously presided over the Ivy League institution, stated on recently that he would be withdrawing from public roles due to his connections with the convicted sex offender.

The freshly disclosed messages revealed that Summers communicated with Epstein until the 24 hours preceding Epstein's 2019 detention for alleged sex trafficking of young people.

In a separate statement, the AI firm expressed it respected his decision to resign.

"We acknowledge his numerous inputs and the viewpoint he offered to the directors," the company stated.

Political Context

This development comes after both chambers of Congress voted on Tuesday to pass a bill that would compel the federal prosecutors to disclose its documents on the case.

The bill will afterward move to the office of the White House for signature. Trump has stated he plans to approve the measure, after modifying his view on the subject following objections from his base.

A group of financier-linked correspondence disclosed by the House Oversight Committee recently included multiple prominent individuals in the billionaire's previous network, without suggesting any illegal behavior by those individuals.

Following the economist's announcement on Monday, the Center for American Progress, a left-leaning policy institute in Washington where he was a prominent member, announced that Summers was ceased to be affiliated with the institution.
