Exceptional Scarlet Electrical Discharge Captured in the Atmosphere

Three photography enthusiasts operating in New Zealand have recorded visual evidence of red lightning, one of the rarest atmospheric displays globally, in which glowing scarlet illuminations become visible in the heavens.

An Unforgettable Night of Discovery

This group of artists initially planned to capture the galactic core over the unique geological structures in the southern region of the country on a night in October, and unexpectedly witnessed the unusual spectacle.

Initially believing they would be lucky to get optimal conditions that after-dark period, but their expedition transformed into “an unforgettable one,” one photographer stated.

“He was checking his files for a Milky Way panorama and realized he had photographed crimson electrical bursts,” the photographer explained. “It was unbelievable – there was a whole bunch of screaming and shouting and all sorts going on in the darkness.”

Understanding Red Sprites

These crimson flashes are atmospheric energy releases in the upper atmosphere, generated by electrical storms. Differing from lightning that strikes downward to the surface, the phenomena shoot upwards towards the upper atmosphere, creating structures that are similar to vertical forms, tapered shapes or even marine creatures. The earliest recorded picture of a red sprite was captured – unintentionally – in the late eighties, by a group at the a academic organization.

Momentary and Dreamlike Sightings

These events are extremely short-lived – enduring only a thousandth of a second – that they are rarely visible to the human sight, but one photographer had a lucky break. “I was coincidentally viewing directly at a sprite when it happened – an ideal happenstance viewing the correct area of the firmament and I saw a short crimson illumination,” he said.

Observing the phenomena was a goal for the artist, an honored dark sky artist. “It seems that you’re seeing something that is not real, it’s very ethereal … the color is a profound crimson that is there for a split second, so it is fascinating to observe.”

Technical and Artistic Mastery

Recording a such an event demands a mastery of advanced imaging techniques, as well as an knowledge about science and artistic vision, the individual explained. “This is a highly complex type of photography that’s very rewarding as well.”

One of the other individuals remarked it was one of the “most amazing after-dark experiences” of his existence. “I could see the starry river glowing above the distant edge while these enormous red tendrils of light swayed above a storm hundreds of kilometres away,” he described.

A Unique Photographic Achievement

As far as he knows, there are no other images showing crimson flashes and the southern hemisphere Milky Way in a single image.

“It represented a unique instance when you know you’re witnessing a phenomenon you’ll probably never see again.”
