Close to 25,000 Lost Power in Queensland and Victorian Regions Following Severe Storms

Nearly 25,000 residences in southeastern Queensland were left lacking electricity on the start of the week after intense storm systems swept through the state, producing wind gusts reaching over 100 km/h.

Substantial Ice Stones and Widespread Damage

Residents observed substantial frozen pellets measuring up to 7 centimeters in particular locations. The Bureau of Meteorology verified that different parts across Queensland had been impacted by large hailstones.

Response teams were attempting to repair power throughout the damaged zones, with dozens of response units activated to handle the widespread outages.

Victorian Weather Woes

Meanwhile, around 1,000 residents in the southern state also faced electricity disruptions after the capital city saw its heaviest rainfall in 18 months.

Rescue organizations received nearly 600 emergency reports across the region, primarily for structural issues but also for collapsed vegetation and flooding.

Most Impacted Locations

  • Werribee - experienced substantial storm damage
  • Hoppers Crossing - numerous assistance requests
  • Wyndham - 179 emergency requests

At one point on the previous day, over 28,000 energy customers in the state were without power.

Weather Forecast

Humid circumstances were forecast to persist along large portions of Queensland's east this week as a low-pressure trough continued to pull in damp air against the shoreline.

Tomorrow was predicted as the wettest day, with ongoing severe weather risk anticipated across different parts of both areas.

Health Warning

Public health experts cautioned that there was an increased chance of weather-related respiratory issues across the northern rural areas, particularly given the ongoing climate situation.

This warning comes after past events where analogous circumstances led to major medical consequences in the region.
