Ceramic Gift, Anyone? Meloni to Sell World Leaders' Gifts for Good Cause

Passing on undesired offerings can be viewed as somewhat rude – except if it's done in the proper manner.

A Charitable Sale

The Italian premier, Giorgia Meloni, is set to sell around 270 gifts given to her by foreign dignitaries while abroad. This unusual assortment could include items such as a miniature chainsaw-holding statuette of Argentinian president Javier Milei and a pair of blue python skin shoes with gold heels.

The presents, together, are worth an estimated €800,000. They are scheduled to be auctioned off via competitive bidding by a Italian fine art auction house. A date has not been finalized, but the goal is to conduct the sale by year's end, with the proceeds benefiting various charities.

Storage Room Holdings

These gifts reportedly kept in a storage room on the upper level of the prime minister's official office. Sources state that Meloni is also planning to auction off gifts received by her predecessors that have been stored away indefinitely.

The detailed catalog is yet to be officially released, but a glimpse were revealed earlier this year when an 11-page list of items received was reviewed by officials. The question focused on whether a legal value limit was being respected. According to regulation, a prime minister must declare presents exceeding €300.

A Global Array of Presents

Among the items:

  • A scarf from the Albanian prime minister, reportedly presented to Meloni for her birthday during a meeting abroad.
  • A sari from Kerala from the Indian leader.
  • A box of jewellery from the president of Slovakia.
  • A porcelain tea set and a selection of wines from Hungary's leader.
  • A ceramic bowl from the ex-American leader.
  • A electronic pad from the leader of Ukraine.
  • Artworks from Moldova.
  • Additional objects including cosmetics, a board, and numerous carpets from trips to North African and Middle Eastern countries.
"Possibly the most unusual gifts included the statuette from Milei and the exotic footwear," reports suggest.

Diplomatic Backdrop

The prime minister has received praise, mostly from within her party, with garnering support from foreign leaders and making Italy as a key protagonist on the international platform once again.

The forthcoming sale highlights a distinct method to manage the state presents that build up during a political career.
