Pat Cummins bowling

Australia's selection chief George Bailey has confirmed that skipper Cummins will be a central figure in the forthcoming Ashes series.

Rumors had circulated that the veteran bowler might be unavailable due to a stress fracture in his back that remained unresolved.

Previous updates from team management suggested no definitive call had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the extended contest scheduled to begin on 21 November in the WACA.

Bailey expressed that the captain is progressing and was "optimistic" about the prospects of participating.

"It's clear that the window is narrowing and multiple considerations involved, not just the physical problem, but other factors as well," the selector added.

"The outlook is good. There's strong faith that he'll participate in a significant role. Hopefully starting in Perth. If not, we'll reassess."

Past Concerns

Cummins was ruled out Australia's limited-overs series against India and New Zealand last month after examinations confirmed a lumbar bone stress.

Previous incidents include of recurring issues, with setbacks in multiple past seasons causing him to miss multiple domestic campaigns in four years.

The bowler mentioned he would be bold in recovery efforts in his recovery plan to secure his spot for the series.

He mentioned that it was unclear if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his rehabilitation but acknowledged it was "pressing" for him to be fit for the opener.

Backup Options

Should Cummins not be fit, ex-skipper Smith will lead the side.

The talented all-rounder was excluded lately from the national team for their ODI contests against India as a safety move because of an abdominal issue.

The selector characterized it as a "minor" injury and confirmed that he'll feature in the state-level matches, so will be "in a good place to be ready to bowl."

"We put so much time has gone into developing the strategy for him to participate for the first Test as an dual-role player," he elaborated.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the first two ODIs anyway. How he handles the willow in shorter formats, should it hinder progress for another day, we just made the decision to take a cautious route."
